Water and Weight Loss

Over the past 5 years I have focused on learning the most effective ways to lose weight. I have come up with the 5 Do’s and 5 Don’ts of weight loss. The most important of the Do’s is drink water.

Why is water so important?

Water is vital to all activities in your body. You can only go 2-3 days without water which is only second in importance to oxygen. Your body can only eliminate fat through urine, feces, and sweat. All of these require water to function.

How much water should I get?

The basic rule is Half your body weight in ounces. So this means that a 200 lb person should drink 100 ounces of water per day. Personally I like to add one more simple rule as well. Add 1 ounce of water for every ounce of Sugery, Caffeinated, or Alcoholic beverage you consume. So this means if someone has a 12 ounce beer then they need to have an extra 12 ounces of water for that day.

Lets look at our example of the 200 lb person. Lets say this person is following this rule and they drink 24 ounces of beer. They should be drinking 100 ounces of water per day plus the extra 24 ounces of water for the alcoholic beverage they had so their total should be 124 ounces for that day.

Does it matter where the water comes from?

Absolutely! The water you consume needs to be clean without any chemicals or toxins added to it. I try to avoid water in plastic bottles if at all possible. Water that is pure and clean is the basic rule. There are many filters on the market that may help to purify your water. The best way to know is to make sure your water is a 7 on the PH Scale. This means the water is neutral. It is not acidic or basic. The more acidic (0-6.9 on the PH scale) the worse it is. If the water is slightly basic (7.1 -8) it is ok but try to get water that is neutral (7 on the PH scale) if at all possible.
